Since early ages of DANTE and TERENA (now known as GEANT Association), RENATER has been an active partner in building the pan-European network, both at governance levels (Board of Directors, General Assembly, Audit Committee) and as part of the series of European projects co-funded by EU.
Supplementing their contribution to the GN4-2 project, RENATER’s teams are also participating in the Task Forces and Special Interest Groups. RENATER encourages the ESR community to participate in these work groups.
The GÉANT project is co-funded by the European National Research and Education Networks (NRENs) and the EU with the objective of increasing network capacities and sharing services within the Education and Research community in Europe.
Under the GÉANT 2020 Framework Partnership Agreement (FPA), the project receives funds from the European Union’s Horizon 2020 research and innovation programme.
The project was in the GN4-2 phase from 1 May 2016 until the end of December 2018.
RENATER participates in work groups on subjects such as network supervision to bring the quality of service to a previously unattainable level, as well as Data Center Interconnect.
The GÉANT project is organised around three groups of functional activities:
- Networking activities (NA), which support the operation and management of all GN4-2 activities, such as project management, internal and external communications and promotions, international liaison and commercial development;
- Service activities (SA), which provide the GÉANT project’s services to the Education and Research community;
- Joint research activities (JRA) to produce critical analyses of future network and application technologies with an eye to the future deployment of emerging technologies throughout the network and services.

European Open Science Cloud (EOSC)
EOSC, a new research paradigm, will offer 1.7 million European researchers and 70 million professionals in the scientific, technological, human sciences and social sciences fields a virtual environment providing open and transparent services for storing, managing, analysing and reusing research data across national boundaries and scientific disciplines. It is also intended to unify the existing scientific data infrastructures currently spread across the different disciplines and the EU’s Member States.
The following infrastructures are already in place:
- European Grid Infrastructure (EGI): Portal for grid/cloud resources and associated services
- EUDAT: E-infrastructure of services and data resources
- Openaire: EU organisation leading the shift in how research is conducted and information is shared
- RDA: The Research Data Alliance builds social and technical channels facilitating the free sharing of data (with more than 7,500 members from 137 countries, the RDA brings together researchers and professionals from throughout the scientific data world)

RENATER focuses on the “network” aspect
Through the French EOSCpilot “Pico2 for Connecting Computing Centers” project, providing connectivity between meso-centres and scientific projects including E-RIHS, HPC, DESY in Germany and others
